University of Kelaniya Secures 1st Place in UI GreenMetric Ranking 

The University of Kelaniya has achieved the top rank among Sri Lankan universities in the 2023 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking. Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to sustainability, the University also improved its global position, advancing to 226th from 241st in 2022 out of 1,183 universities worldwide.

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, established by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, assesses universities’ environmental sustainability across six key criteria: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Conservation, Transportation, and Education. With 39 indicators, the ranking reflects each institution's dedication to fostering green campuses and environmental stewardship, marking a significant recognition of the University of Kelaniya’s environmental efforts.

This accomplishment underscores the University’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices on campus and fostering awareness among students, staff, and the community, reinforcing its role as a leader in environmental sustainability.

University of Kelaniya Wins the South Asia Youth Water Challenge 2023 

The Electronics Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) Team of the University of Kelaniya has won the prestigious South Asia Youth Water Challenge 2023 for their innovation, an "Automated Stand-alone Wireless Water Quality Monitoring and Rainwater Harvesting System." This cutting-edge system automatically collects rainwater and directs it to different tanks based on monitored water quality, aiming to connect arid and rural areas with real-time water quality monitoring and sustainable water management.

The team was awarded the Youth Water Changemakers Award at a ceremony organized by the Global Water Partnership, held at the Water Pavilion of COP 28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023. The awards, presented by His Excellency Kefentse Mzwinila, Botswana’s Minister of Lands, Water, and Water Affairs, highlighted promising climate-resilient innovations. Recognized for its potential to address water security and climate resilience, the EDIC team's innovation will be supported for further development, enhancing its scalability and replication for broader impact.

The award ceremony at the University of Kelaniya was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar, along with Team EDIC members including Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Professor Aruna Ranaweera, Coordinator, EDIC. Representatives from Global Water Partnership South Asia, Brandix Apparel Pvt. Ltd., and other notable guests were also present. The award, jointly organized by GWP South Asia and Brandix Apparel Pvt. Ltd., underscores the commitment of young innovators towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, advocating for sustainable water and sanitation solutions.

University of Kelaniya Establishes MoU with LOLC Life Assurance Ltd and LOLC General Insurance PLC 

The University of Kelaniya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LOLC Life Assurance Ltd and LOLC General Insurance PLC on the 15th of December 2023, at the University Senate Room. This collaboration is intended to create internship and management trainee opportunities for Insurance Degree undergraduates, strengthening the pathway from academic learning to professional practice.

The MoU was signed by Mrs. Nadika Opatha, Director and Chief Executive Officer, representing LOLC Life Assurance Ltd, alongside Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Professor W. M. C. B. Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The agreement marks a collaborative commitment to support students in gaining hands-on experience and skills necessary for career development in the insurance industry.

The ceremony was attended by key representatives from LOLC, including Mr. Suranga Wewegedara, Head of Human Resources; Mr. Dharshana Maldeniya, Head of Sales Administration & Sales Support; and Mr. Nadeesh Dheerasekara, Associate Manager – Human Resources. Also present were Dr. Ruwani Fernando, Head of the Department of Finance, along with faculty members, senior lecturers, and undergraduates from the Department of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with College of Human and Social Sciences, Kanazawa University 

The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the College of Human and Social Sciences of Kanazawa University, Japan, on the 5th of December 2023 at the Faculty of Humanities Auditorium. This MoU establishes a collaborative agreement to foster academic exchanges, research initiatives, and shared educational opportunities between the two institutions.

Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, and Professor Kaname Miura, Dean of the College of Human and Social Sciences, Kanazawa University, formalized the agreement. Mr. N. Nalika Kandewatta, Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Lecturer M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, Senior Lecturer Dr. Charika Wickramaratne, as well as Professor Tetsuya Sagawa, Ms. Noriko Hamura, and Mr. Jun Mogami from Kanazawa University, joined the event online.

The partnership is intended to enhance knowledge exchange through educational exchanges, higher education opportunities, and joint research projects. Additionally, Kanazawa University has agreed to provide scholarships for students and scholars from the University of Kelaniya, specifically benefiting students of the Sports Science and Physical Education Department, alongside other disciplines within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Cultural Exchange Programme with Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT 

The University of Kelaniya welcomed delegates from the Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT on the 20th of November 2023 in Colombo, engaging in a cultural exchange program aimed at fostering mutual understanding and learning. This day-long event provided a platform for students from the University of Kelaniya and Japanese guests aboard the ship to connect and share their cultural heritage.

The program began with a welcome address by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director of the Centre for International Affairs, who has coordinated this annual event since 2001. The day unfolded with a series of performances, including a traditional Sinhala song and dance that showcased Sri Lankan cultural richness. Language learning activities allowed participants to engage in both Sinhala and Japanese, while traditional attire, origami, and traditional games facilitated further cultural immersion.

Participants from the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, and Commerce and Management Studies joined the event. In the afternoon, guests experienced Japanese music, dance, and dressing in traditional Japanese attire. The program concluded with a visit to the PEACEBOAT at the Colombo Port, symbolizing the success of this enriching cross-cultural exchange.

University of Kelaniya Faculty of Medicine Donates Fully Equipped School Laboratory to Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya 

As part of its ongoing community care initiatives, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya officially handed over a newly equipped school laboratory to Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya, marking the completion of the program's second phase. This project, connected with the Health Camp and Medical Exhibition 2023, included the full renovation of a previously unused building at the school, transforming it into a fully functional laboratory for student use.

The Health Camp and Medical Exhibition, held on April 30 under the theme “Suwapath Diviyata Manusath Mehewara” ("A Human Mission for a Healthy Life"), saw over 5,000 attendees for health services and more than 10,000 visitors to the medical exhibition. The first phase of the initiative included donations of school equipment and a book drive valued at nearly LKR 500,000, held on July 27, benefitting students of Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya. Following the laboratory donation in this second phase, the third phase will see the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall for Galgamuwa Maha Nanneriya Vidyalaya, scheduled to be completed soon.

The event was attended by Cadre Chair Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Cadre Chair Senior Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi; and Professor Shiromi Perera, whose support has been instrumental in these community projects.

University of Kelaniya Faculty of Medicine Ranked Among Top 800–1000 in Global Medical Schools 

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya has achieved a prestigious ranking, placing within the top 800–1000 medical schools worldwide according to the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. This recognition is a notable accomplishment, with the University of Kelaniya being one of only three medical schools in Sri Lanka to earn a position in the global listing.

THE World University Rankings is a respected global league table that evaluates research-intensive universities across core areas such as teaching quality, research impact, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. The ranking system incorporates 18 performance indicators to deliver a comprehensive comparison of institutions. The Faculty of Medicine’s ranking underscores its dedication to academic excellence, research, and clinical practice, reflecting its commitment to providing high-quality education and producing graduates who are recognized by employers worldwide.

In addition to its medical school ranking, the University of Kelaniya recently secured a position within the top 2000 universities globally. This highlights the institution's continuous commitment to excellence in higher education across various disciplines.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Media Discussion on Violence Against Women and Girl Children 

The Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Kelaniya hosted a significant media discussion on "Violence Against Women and Girl Children" on 26th October 2023. The event aimed to raise awareness about the issue of violence affecting women and girls and to engage key stakeholders in addressing this pervasive social challenge.

The discussion featured prominent speakers from various fields. Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, opened the event by welcoming the participants and addressing the social impact of violence against women and girl children. Senior Professor Anuruddhi Edirisinghe from the Department of Forensic Medicine presented insights on the medico-legal aspects of the issue. The event also included contributions from Mrs. Renuka Jayasundara, Deputy Inspector General of Police, who discussed child abuse, and Mrs. Rasanjali Pathirage, President of the Disability Organizations Joint Front, who highlighted the violence faced by differently-abled girls. Lawyer Chathura Gunarathna provided an overview of the legal frameworks surrounding violence against women and children, and Mrs. Iresha Dharmasena from the National Committee on Women shared the committee's role in addressing these issues.

The discussion concluded with a Q&A session, led by Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe, allowing for further interaction and engagement with the audience. The event was attended by media officers and journalists from respected media outlets, ensuring wide dissemination of the important messages shared during the discussion.

University of Kelaniya Fosters Future E-commerce Leaders with Daraz Collaboration  

A transformative collaboration between the Department of Marketing Management at the University of Kelaniya and Daraz aimed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands, empowering students to become future leaders in the dynamic realm of e-commerce and digital marketing. This initiative, which commenced in August 2023, involved a four-day workshop held from 16th to 19th October 2023, including lectures, panel discussions, case studies, and field visits, providing students with valuable insights into the world of e-business and e-commerce.

The workshop featured sessions delivered by Daraz's senior management team, including Mr. Sajith Suhile, Mr. Oshan Ranatunga, Mr. Kaushal Mendis, and others, who engaged in discussions with students on contemporary e-commerce topics. Students worked on two comprehensive case studies related to commercial strategies and supply chain operations, which they later presented at the closing ceremony on 23rd November 2023. The students' presentations were evaluated by a distinguished panel from Daraz, and certificates were awarded to participants in recognition of their efforts.

This collaboration was a significant step in fostering industry-academic partnerships, with faculty members Mr. Thilina Karunanayake, Ms. Viduni Udovita, Mr. Nipun Hewapathirana, Mr. Theja Bandara, and Ms. Lakna Madhushika playing a key role in the success of the program. The initiative reflects the University of Kelaniya's commitment to equipping students with practical knowledge and skills to thrive in the evolving field of e-commerce and digital marketing.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Fortude (Pvt) Ltd to Enhance Education and Career Opportunities  

The University of Kelaniya and Fortude (Pvt) Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 13, 2023, marking a significant step towards enhancing the educational experience and career prospects of undergraduates enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Management Honors in Accounting Information Systems program. The MoU was signed at the Senate Room of the University of Kelaniya, outlining a collaborative partnership aimed at bridging the gap between academia and the professional world.

This partnership aims to provide specialized educational opportunities, including internships and a specialized certificate course, to students in the Accounting Information Systems degree program. Fortude has committed to offering internship placements for eligible students, providing them with valuable industry experience that will equip them for the dynamic field of Accounting Information Systems. The collaboration will ensure that students are better prepared to enter the workforce and meet the challenges of the evolving job market.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Graduate Entrepreneur Exhibition & Sale (GEES) - 2023 

The Career Guidance Unit (CGU) of the University of Kelaniya organized the Graduate Entrepreneur Exhibition & Sale (GEES) - 2023 on September 20, 2023, at the CGU premises. The event featured 35 innovative graduate entrepreneurs who showcased their unique products, aiming to promote entrepreneurship among graduates.

The event provided a valuable platform for emerging graduate entrepreneurs to present their creations, connect with potential customers, and gain marketplace exposure. By encouraging entrepreneurship, GEES aimed to inspire graduates to transform their creative ideas into viable business ventures.

University of Kelaniya Hosts International Peace Day Celebration and Film Review 

The Philosophy Association of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kelaniya organized an International Peace Day Celebration and a film review on September 20, 2023. The event highlighted this year’s Peace Day theme, "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals."

The event featured Senior Lecturer Upul Jayantha Ranepura, Head of the Department of Drama, Cinema, and Television, as the chief guest, who conducted an insightful review of the film The Bang Bang Club. The review sparked a discussion on themes of peace and conflict, resonating with the day’s theme of promoting actions for global peace.

The celebration was attended by Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, academic staff from the Department of Philosophy, and other invitees, marking a meaningful tribute to International Peace Day.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd  

An international agreement was established between the University of Kelaniya and Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd, India, to conduct research on "Rasaushdis" (Herbo-mineral drugs). The signing took place at the Senate Hall of the University of Kelaniya on September 12, 2023.

This agreement aims to foster international scholarly collaboration, cultural exchange, and support for educational and professional activities. The partnership will enable joint research initiatives, participation in seminars, academic meetings, and the organization of joint conferences and workshops. Faculty members from the Department of Chemistry, University of Kelaniya, will lead research activities in collaboration with Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd, focusing on the scientific exploration of traditional Herbo-mineral medicines.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Second Workshop of the EUS Project 

The University of Kelaniya held the second workshop of the "Empowering University Staff with Data and Web Skills" (EUS) Project on 7th September 2023 at the Staff Development Centre. Organized by the Staff Development Centre, this workshop aimed to cultivate a smart working culture through a management training program for the university’s staff, structured around five key sessions.

Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, opened the event with a presentation on the strategic direction of the university, emphasizing the need for adaptability. Additional sessions featured insights from Dr. Chamli Pushpakumara on university rankings and information systems, Dr. Chathura Rajapaksha on strategic planning, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka on crisis leadership. Senior Lecturer G. H. B. A. De Silva concluded the workshop with a presentation on AI tools for daily tasks. The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony led by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva.

University of Kelaniya Engages in Educational Dialogue with Kanazawa and Chukyo Universities of Japan 

An educational discussion took place on 5th September 2023 between representatives from Kanazawa University and Chukyo University of Japan and the University of Kelaniya. This meeting, held at the Vice Chancellor’s office, focused on collaborative educational research in inter-university sport education and social sciences. The parties discussed mutual goals and agreed to offer Japanese scholarships as part of Inter-University Student Exchange programs.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, led the discussions alongside Professor Tetsuya Sagawa from Kanazawa University, and Professors Shohei Kokudo, Tohiru Koizo, and Takahiro Nakano from Chukyo University. Senior Lecturer M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, and other academic staff from the department actively participated, with Senior Lecturer Dr. Charika Wickramaratne serving as the coordinator.

University of Kelaniya Hosts IoT Workshop for Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya Students 

The Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya hosted a workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT) for students from Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda, on 4th September 2023. Held on the university campus, the workshop aimed to introduce students to Arduino software and inspire greater interest in information technology among female students, addressing the low representation of women in the tech industry.

Participants included students from grades 8 to 13 who are members of the school’s IoT club. The IT Department of the National Institute of Education also joined the workshop, enhancing the interactive learning experience. The workshop was well-received, with students showing enthusiasm and engagement in the hands-on activities.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Peer Counselors Certificate Awarding Ceremony 2023 

The Kalana Mithuru Sevana at the University of Kelaniya organized the Peer Counselors Certificate Awarding Ceremony 2023 for Batch 01 on 25th August 2023. The event, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium, also marked the 25th anniversary of Kalana Mithuru Sevana, established in 1998. Additionally, the inauguration ceremony for Peer Counselor Batch 02 was conducted on the same day.

The primary objectives of this program were to enhance awareness among students about peer counseling, promote mental well-being, and prevent mental health-related issues through comprehensive training. Emeritus Professor Mangalika Hettiarachchi, the former Director and Founder of Kalana Mithuru Sevana, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the center's legacy and importance.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Mastercard Sri Lanka 

The Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya formalized a collaborative agreement with Mastercard Sri Lanka on 15th August 2023, with a signing ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. This partnership aims to advance studies and research on digital transformation, offering students significant opportunities in this vital field.

As part of the MoU, the Mastercard Digital Excellence Award will recognize outstanding research on digital transformation, and select students will be eligible for internships at the Mastercard Technology Centre in Bangalore, India. This initiative highlights the shared commitment of both institutions to promoting academic and practical advancements in digital technologies.

University of Kelaniya and Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency Sign MoU  

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) on 11th August 2023 at the Vice-Chancellor's office at the University of Kelaniya. This partnership aims to strengthen collaboration on sports science, physical education, and anti-doping research and awareness initiatives.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, signed the MoU alongside key university representatives, including Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University; and Ms. M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education. Representing SLADA were Professor Arjuna De Silva, Chairman, and Dr. Shiroma Pilapitiya De Alwis, Director General.

University of Kelaniya and NDB Capital Holdings Limited Sign MoU  

The University of Kelaniya and NDB Capital Holdings Limited, Sri Lanka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10th August 2023 at the Senate Room of the University. The MoU aims to enhance the educational experience of undergraduates in the Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Financial Engineering and Finance programs within the Department of Finance, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.

This agreement provides students with access to valuable internship opportunities, specialized skills development, and technical workshops in investment advisory and research. Additionally, NDB Capital Holdings will contribute to the annual Investment Week organized by the Department of Finance, offering students insight into real-world financial practices and industry expertise.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Japan-Sri Lanka Cultural Exchange Program - Global Youth Leader 

A Japan-Sri Lanka cultural exchange program was held from 17th to 23rd August 2023, bringing together Japanese and Sri Lankan students for a week-long journey of cross-cultural engagement. This program, organized by the UNSDGs in collaboration with the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Kelaniya, included participation from 18 Japanese students, 42 UNSDG members, 15 undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya's Japanese Unit, and five high school students from Sri Lanka.

The visiting Japanese students were warmly received at the Granbell Hotel in Colombo by students from the University of Kelaniya and high school Japanese language students. The group engaged in a range of activities, including visits to the National Youth Services Council (NYSC), the Parliament of Sri Lanka, and the President's House. Their cultural exploration extended to notable sites such as the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, New Giragama Tea Factory, University of Peradeniya, and the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

The program also featured a lecture by H.E. Mr. Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka, held at the University of Kelaniya, and an insightful panel discussion with key participants including Mrs. Anna Suzuki from the Japanese Embassy, Mr. Sakurazawa from JICA, Mr. Sato from Granbell Hotel, Mr. Kawano of the Japanese School, and Professor Ananda Kumara. The Industry Consultative Forum, organized by the Industry Interaction Cell for Computing and Technology (IICfCT) at the Faculty of Computing and Technology, University of Kelaniya, took place on the 27th and 28th of July 2023 at the Taj Samudra, Colombo. The forum aimed to foster collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the skills needed to meet industry demands.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Lecture on Ancient Buddhist Art in Collaboration with SAARC Cultural Center  

The SAARC Cultural Center of Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Department of Archaeology at the University of Kelaniya, organized an insightful lecture on July 28, 2023. Held at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium and accessible via Zoom, the event welcomed both local and international participants.

The lecture, titled "Contradictions in the Texts and Confusions in the Iconography: Revisiting the Theme of the Great Departure of Bodhisattva Siddhartha in the Ancient Buddhist Art of India and Sri Lanka," was delivered by Professor Osmund Bopearachchi, Emeritus Director of the French National Center for Scientific Research. The event included addresses from Mrs. Renuka Ekanayake, Director of the SAARC Cultural Center, Dr. Bina Gandhi Deori, Deputy Director, and Senior Professor Anura Manatunga of the University of Kelaniya’s Department of Archaeology.

University of Kelaniya Career Guidance Unit Hosts Workshop on Freelancing Success 

The Career Guidance Unit (CGU) of the University of Kelaniya organized a workshop titled "How to be a Successful Freelancer" in partnership with the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) on July 27, 2023. The workshop, held at the CGU auditorium, ran from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Aimed at equipping students with essential freelancing skills, the workshop focused on fostering digital entrepreneurship and preparing participants to enter the ICT workforce. It provided practical guidance on freelancing opportunities, skill development, and online platform utilization.

A total of 47 undergraduates attended, gaining valuable insights into building successful freelancing careers in the digital economy.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Professor Jiajuan Xiong of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, China 

Professor Jiajuan Xiong of the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE), Chengdu, China, met with Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, on June 25, 2023, at the Vice-Chancellor's office as part of her research visit. Professor Xiong conveyed greetings and presented a memento on behalf of Professor Zhuo Zhi, President of SWUFE.

During her stay, Professor Xiong also held discussions on June 13 with Dr. Kavithaa Rajarathnam, Head of the Department of Linguistics, and Ms. Kumudu Gamage, Former Head, exploring academic collaborations. Professor Xiong announced a three-year full scholarship opportunity for a Linguistics graduate from Kelaniya to pursue a Master’s degree at SWUFE starting September 2023. She also engaged with BA Honours Linguistics students on her research project on Nominal Phrases in Chinese and Sinhala and utilized the university library for her studies.

The Centre for International Affairs coordinated the visit, with Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Ms. Sashini Chandrasekara, and Ms. Sanduni Iddamalgoda facilitating international cooperation and student engagement.

University of Kelaniya Opens Smart Learning Zone

The University of Kelaniya held an opening ceremony for the new Smart Learning Zone of the Department of Accountancy on June 13, 2023, within the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. This state-of-the-art learning facility was established as part of the AHEAD project, funded by the ELTA-ELSE Development Project of the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the University Grants Commission and the World Bank.

Equipped with advanced technology, the Smart Learning Zone fosters a blended learning environment that supports flipped classroom pedagogy, enhancing the teaching and learning experience for both students and faculty members.

University of Kelaniya Inaugurates BSc Honors in Sports Science Degree Programme 

The University of Kelaniya held the inauguration ceremony for the BSc Honors in Sports Science Degree Programme on the 5th of June 2023 in the Faculty of Science Board Room. Organized to welcome the 2021/2022 intake of students, the event marked the beginning of their journey in sports science education.

The ceremony was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the chief guest, along with Senior Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and several department heads and faculty members. Professor Aruna Wanninayake, Head of the Sports and Exercise Science Unit, and Mr. G. G. U. Saman Kumara, Acting Director of Physical Education, were also present, along with academic and non-academic staff.

In her address, Professor De Silva encouraged students to balance academics with sports and other extracurricular pursuits. Professor Kalingamudali emphasized the local and international opportunities awaiting graduates and the importance of building resilience. University of Kelaniya Hosts Certificate Awarding Ceremony for Sustainability Leadership Training Programme and Launches GreenInsights e-Magazine 

The University of Kelaniya held the Certificate Awarding Ceremony for the 6th cycle of the Sustainability Leadership Training Programme (SLTP) on the 8th of June 2023 in the university’s Senate Room. Organized by the Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS), this program empowers undergraduates with knowledge of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters attitudes towards environmental conservation.

Dr. Pansujee Dissanayake, Deputy Director of CSS and SLTP coordinator, introduced the program’s objectives. Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva and Registrar Mr. K.K.K. Dharmathilaka awarded certificates to SLTP graduates, with Professor De Silva encouraging students to continue their efforts in climate action and SDG awareness.

In conjunction with the ceremony, CSS also launched the second edition of the “GreenInsights” e-magazine. Featuring articles on SDG-related research from universities across Sri Lanka, this edition serves as a platform for sustainability scholarship. University of Kelaniya Hosts Financial Awareness Programme for Undergraduates 

The Central Business Incubator (CBI) of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, in partnership with the Regional Development Bank of Sri Lanka (RDB), conducted an awareness programme on the 15th of June 2023. This event, held at the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, aimed to educate undergraduates on financial resources and services available to support entrepreneurial ventures.

The programme addressed common challenges faced by budding entrepreneurs, including financing constraints that often hinder start-up efforts. RDB representatives, including Chairman Mr. Susantha De Silva, Assistant General Manager for Marketing Mr. L. A. R. Fernando, Digital Banking Manager Mr. Hasitha Amarasinghe, and Senior Manager for Credit Mr. Saman Priyankara, provided insights into financial support and resources available through RDB. Representing the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, Director of CBI, and other faculty members engaged in discussions on fostering entrepreneurship among undergraduates.

With over 30 students from various faculties in attendance, this initiative marked an important step toward facilitating entrepreneurial activity at the University of Kelaniya. According to Dr. Dissanayake, ongoing discussions with RDB aim to further expand support for student entrepreneurs.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Unilever Sri Lanka Limited 

An MoU was signed between the University of Kelaniya and Unilever Sri Lanka Limited on the 1st of June 2023 at the Senate Room of the University of Kelaniya.

The MoU was established to foster a cooperative industry-academic relationship aimed at enhancing the skills and awareness of undergraduates in the Department of Commerce and Financial Management (DCFM). This collaboration will provide students with internship opportunities, short-term industry exposure programs, work orientation programs, and personal advancement programs, allowing them to gain valuable practical experience and skills for career readiness.

The signing was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilake, the Registrar, Dr. M. M. M. Shamil, Head of the DCFM, along with representatives from Unilever Sri Lanka, including Mr. Niroshan Jayasuriya, National Finance Director, Ms. Hiruni Perera, HR Business Partner, and other senior officials from both organizations.

University of Kelaniya Signs Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka 

An agreement was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) on the 16th of June 2023 at the Vice Chancellor’s Office, marking a collaborative initiative to enhance the training opportunities for graduates in Library and Information Science (LIS). This partnership aims to equip LIS graduates from the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, with hands-on experience at the Library and Information Centre (LIC) of CBSL.

The program focuses on developing skills in library automation, database management, and the use of KOHA software. Graduates will also gain access to valuable reference sources, a diverse collection of works, and extensive databases at CBSL, enriching their expertise in library sciences.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor M. M. Gunatilaka, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and other distinguished faculty members from the Department of Library and Information Science were present at the event. University of Kelaniya's Central Business Incubator Hosts Digital Marketing Workshop for SMEs 

The Central Business Incubator of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies at the University of Kelaniya conducted a three-day workshop on digital marketing from May 2 to May 4, 2023. This workshop series aimed to provide small and medium-scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) with essential knowledge of digital marketing strategies and applications relevant to their business growth.

Professor P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, inaugurated the first day’s session, followed by an introduction from Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, Director of the Central Business Incubator. Senior Lecturer Mr. D. K. Thilina from the Department of Marketing Management served as the resource person, focusing on strategic digital marketing planning for effective online presence. The second day featured Senior Lecturer Mr. Harshaka Hettiarachchi, who shared insights on Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and social media behavior, while Mr. Ushan Wijesekara, Founder of Thaproban Digital (Pvt) Ltd, led the final session on Social Media Marketing, demonstrating practical tools for campaign management and performance analysis.

Approximately thirty entrepreneurs attended this workshop, benefiting from practical digital marketing skills and resources shared by experienced professionals, contributing to the sustainable growth of their businesses.

University of Kelaniya PRMM Undergraduates Meet Industry Experts 

A workshop organized by the Public Relations and Media Management (PRMM) Students' Association of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya was held on May 16, 2023. This event aimed to deepen undergraduates' knowledge of the Public Relations industry in Sri Lanka, providing an opportunity to learn directly from industry experts about the skills required for PR roles in professional agencies.

The workshop featured guest speakers from prominent PR firms, including Mr. Mushthak Ahamed, Chief Operating Officer, and Ms. Thilani Weerarathne, Assistant Manager of HardTalk Pvt Ltd, alongside Ms. Amali Fernando, Account Director, and Mr. Hasitha Perera, Senior Account Manager from Ogilvy PR, Sri Lanka. They conducted two interactive sessions, sharing real-life examples of PR campaigns and discussing how theoretical concepts are applied in practice to meet client needs across diverse sectors.

Students from all years of the PRMM honors degree program attended, along with faculty members from the Department of Mass Communication. University of Kelaniya Signs Data Licensing Agreement with Cambridge Enterprise Limited, UK 

The University of Kelaniya has entered into its first foreign data licensing agreement with Cambridge Enterprise Limited of the University of Cambridge, marking a significant milestone in international collaboration. This virtual agreement, signed on May 30, 2023, strengthens the university’s engagement in global research initiatives.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar, represented the University of Kelaniya, while Mr. Marcio Siqueira, Head of Physical Science, signed on behalf of Cambridge Enterprise Limited. The agreement grants Cambridge Enterprise Limited access to a dataset from an observational study on thalassemia, led by Professor Sachith Mettananda from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. This dataset will support a new patent application by the University of Cambridge.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Special Cultural Event for Thalassemia Awareness 

The University of Kelaniya organized a special cultural event at the Adolescent and Adult Thalassemia Care Centre to commemorate World Thalassemia Day, raising awareness about the disease and supporting patients and their families. Held on the 9th of May at 5:00 p.m., the event aimed to uplift the spirits of thalassemia patients and commemorate those affected by the condition globally.

Organized by Professor Anuja Premawardana and Dr. Padmapani Padeniya, alongside the dedicated staff of the University’s Thalassemia Unit, the event featured renowned artists Bathiya Jayakodi, Santhush Weeraman, and guitarist Nalin Sampath, who entertained the attendees, bringing joy and encouragement to patients and their families. The cultural evening highlighted the ongoing fight against thalassemia and the resilience of patients in the face of the disease.

Distinguished guests included Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Janaki Dissanayake, Consultant in Charge of the Blood Bank; and Professors Anuja Premawardhena, Senani Williams, Shamila de Silva, Sachith Metthananda, and Shiromi Perera. University of Kelaniya Signs Two License Agreements with Susen Holdings Pvt Ltd 

The University of Kelaniya marked a significant advancement in technology transfer through the signing of two license agreements with Susen Holdings Pvt Ltd. This event, held on May 26, 2023, at the Vice Chancellor’s office, represents a promising collaboration between academia and industry, underscoring the University’s dedication to innovation, research, and impactful partnerships.

Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Mr. K. K. K. DharmaThilaka, Registrar; and Senior Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, signed the agreements on behalf of the University. Representing Susen Holdings Pvt Ltd, Managing Director Mr. P. P. D. Gihan Kanishka, along with Mrs. D. L. Padmaseeli and Mrs. Romani Thalawatte, were present to formalize the agreements. The licensed technologies include the "Auto Removing Regulator for Liquefied Petroleum Gas Cylinders and Electricity Cut-off System at Gas Leakages," which improves safety by detecting gas leaks and cutting off power, and the "Artificial Intelligence-based Smart Liquid Petroleum Gas Level Indicator," which employs AI for real-time gas level monitoring.

These innovations were developed by research teams led by Senior Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali with contributions from several academic experts. University of Kelaniya Hosts Graduate Entrepreneur Programme 

The University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA), organized a Graduate Entrepreneur Programme from 2nd to 4th May 2023. The initiative, hosted at the Career Guidance Unit (CGU) Auditorium, aimed to equip undergraduates with entrepreneurial skills and inspire them to explore opportunities in the business sector.

Designed to motivate and support emerging entrepreneurs, the program provided essential skills and guidance for forty participating students. Emphasis was placed on developing competencies to manage and grow new ventures, with insights into securing financial support to drive business initiatives. The inauguration of the event took place on 2nd May, marking the start of three days of intensive training and interactive sessions.

Key figures in attendance included Senior Professor Dilkushi Wettewe, Director of the Career Guidance Unit, along with Mr. Dhanuka Liyanagamage, Director of NEDA. NEDA representatives, including Ms. Bhagya Nakandala, Mr. D. B. University of Kelaniya Hosts 'Gnāna Yātrā 2023' Media Training Workshop for SLBC Staff 

The 'Gnāna Yātrā 2023' media training workshop, organized by the Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya, was held on 31st May 2023. The workshop targeted presenters and program producers of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), aiming to enhance their skills in various aspects of media and communication.

Throughout the day, SLBC participants engaged in sessions led by distinguished university faculty. Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe of the Department of Mass Communication discussed "Source Research and Radio Journalism," providing insights into effective sourcing and storytelling in radio. Senior Lecturer Chintaka Ranasinghe from the Department of Sinhala shared techniques on "Language and Imagination," while Senior Lecturer Tharindu Dhananjaya from the Department of Human Resource Management offered a session on "The Communicator and Soft Skills Development."

The inauguration of the workshop was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit, and Mr. Hudson Samarasinghe, Chairman of SLBC, who served as chief guests. University of Kelaniya Athletes and Teams Honored at SLUSA Awards Ceremony 2022 

The 'SLUSA Awards 2022,' organized by the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association (SLUSA), was held on the 10th of May 2023 at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This event recognized the accomplishments of undergraduate athletes and sports teams from universities across Sri Lanka, including those from the University of Kelaniya who had excelled at the Inter-University Championships (IUC) 2022.

A total of forty-eight undergraduate athletes and three championship-winning teams—the Carrom, Karate, and Rugby teams—from the University of Kelaniya received recognition for their exceptional performances. These athletes were also awarded colors for their individual achievements in the IUC 2022. In total, 483 undergraduate athletes from 21 sports disciplines were honored at the ceremony, celebrating their dedication to university-level sports.

Professor Upul Subhasinghe, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, attended as the chief guest. Other attendees included Vice-Chancellors, Sports Advisory Board Chairpersons, Registrars, Bursars, and Directors of Physical Education from SLUSA member universities. University of Kelaniya Hosts Program on “Celebrating Diversity and Empowering Undergraduates” 

The University of Kelaniya's Inclusivity Centre within the Faculty of Humanities organized a program titled “Celebrating Diversity and Empowering Undergraduates” on May 2nd, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The initiative aimed to foster inclusive and diverse learning communities in higher education by engaging students of various backgrounds.

The event included collaborative performances by students with and without disabilities, presented in English, Sinhala, Tamil, and sign languages to ensure full accessibility. Attendees were addressed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, the Director of the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality of the University Grants Commission, the Country Director for Sri Lanka and Bangladesh of The International Foundation for Electoral Systems, the Head of the Computing Department of Goldsmiths, University of London, and an Assistant Director from the Ministry of Education. Faculty Deans, Heads of Departments, staff members, and students with disabilities were also in attendance.

University of Kelaniya Organizes Health Camp and Medical Exhibition

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya successfully organized a health camp and medical exhibition at Mahananneriya Maha Vidyalaya, Galgamuwa, on April 30th, 2023. University of Kelaniya's MBA Program Achieves ISO 21001:2018 Certification 

On the 28th of April 2023, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at the University of Kelaniya received the prestigious ISO 21001:2018 certification from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). This recognition was awarded in a ceremony held at the Vice Chancellor's office, marking a significant achievement for the MBA unit of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The certification, which is valid for three years from April 2023, affirms that the MBA program meets the standards set by the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework, focusing on the design, development, and delivery of the program.

This milestone makes the University of Kelaniya's MBA program the first-ever state-owned educational unit in Sri Lanka to receive this certification, highlighting its commitment to maintaining high-quality management education. The achievement is a testament to the rigorous standards and practices implemented by the program's management team.

University of Kelaniya and Orel Corporation Launch Smart Ceiling Fan Controller 

On April 27, 2023, the University of Kelaniya and Orel Corporation Pvt Ltd celebrated a successful partnership with the launch of the "Smart Ceiling Fan Controller" at the Trace City Auditorium. This new product, developed by the university and manufactured by Orel Corporation, integrates innovative technology allowing homeowners to control ceiling fans through a smartphone app, without requiring a neutral connection. The technology enables any existing ceiling fan to be converted into a smart fan by simply replacing the traditional fan regulator with the newly designed controller.

The event also included the signing of five licensing agreements between the University of Kelaniya and Orel Corporation Pvt Ltd, marking the transfer of newly invented and patented technologies developed by the university. Senior Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, led the research team behind the smart fan controller, while the Electronic Design and Innovation Center at the university was responsible for the development of the patented technologies.

University of Kelaniya Hosts "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Talent Competition 

The Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya hosted the 2023 "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition on April 26 at Sri Dharmaloka Hall. This annual event featured two categories—Speech and Talent—providing a platform for students pursuing Bachelor of Arts Honours in Chinese to showcase their language skills and cultural talents. Winners received awards, including Excellent, First, Second, Third, and Merit certificates, along with cash prizes.

In addition to the main competition, an Announcing Competition was held in Sinhala, English, and Chinese, with seven students earning certificates and cash awards. University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Bank of Ceylon

The University of Kelaniya signed an MoU with the Bank of Ceylon on April 25, 2022, at the Senate Room. This agreement will enable the awarding of “Gold Medals” to the best-performing student in each faculty, totaling six medals presented at the university’s General Convocation.

The Bank of Ceylon has established a fixed deposit of LKR 1 million in the name of the university, with the interest income dedicated to supporting this awards initiative. The MoU was organized by the Internship and Career Development Centre, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS), under the guidance of Dean Prof. Narada Fernando, further strengthening ties between the university and industry.

University of Kelaniya Partners with Institute of Ocean Resources Analysis for Ocean Conservation 

The University of Kelaniya entered a new partnership with the Institute of Ocean Resources Analysis (Guarantee) Limited on April 10, 2023, aimed at promoting sustainable ocean and marine resource management. This collaboration seeks to lay the groundwork for a “Blue Economy,” focused on digitalizing efforts to protect and sustainably exploit ocean resources for future generations.

Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), the MoU emphasizes the development of digital infrastructure and innovative technologies. This initiative will foster sustainable practices in marine resource conservation, regeneration, and usage in Sri Lanka, paving the way for a responsible Blue Economy model.

The signing event took place at the University of Kelaniya, with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University, Mr. K. K. K. University of Kelaniya Signs MoUs with Janashakthi Group and University of Waikato 

The Department of Finance at the University of Kelaniya entered into two separate agreements with the Janashakthi Group and the University of Waikato, New Zealand, on the 10th of April 2023. The signing ceremony took place in the Senate Room, where representatives discussed the collaborations aimed at enhancing opportunities for finance students.

The MoU with Janashakthi Group focuses on recognizing outstanding students in the Bachelor of Business Management Honors in Insurance program. Janashakthi will award a prestigious gold medal and a scholarship of Rs. 30,000 to the top-performing graduate in the program. Additionally, Janashakthi will offer internship opportunities and mentorship programs for students interested in pursuing careers in insurance.

The agreement with the University of Waikato establishes a pathway for finance students to complete a Master of Applied Finance. Students who complete their first trimester of the Master of Professional Finance at the University of Kelaniya can continue their studies at Waikato, providing a unique opportunity for international academic exposure.

University of Kelaniya Signs Agreements with Unitec and TTESC 

The University of Kelaniya formalized two significant agreements with Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Unitec) and Beijing Tomorrow Technology Education Service Center (TTESC) on the 3rd of April 2023. These partnerships, established at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, aim to enhance educational pathways for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The first agreement, a pathway arrangement between the Department of Accountancy and Unitec, grants exemptions for specific undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This pathway provides Department of Accountancy students with direct entry to the Unitec Master of Professional Accounting program. Additionally, those who complete the Higher Diploma in Business Accounting (HDBA) can progress to the Unitec Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) program, expanding educational opportunities for students pursuing advanced studies in accounting.

A second agreement between the Department of Accountancy and TTESC focuses on extending the Master of Business (MBuS) degree program to China, strengthening the department’s international collaboration. University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with People’s Bank 

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, and the People’s Bank on the 24th of March 2023. The ceremony took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Office of the University of Kelaniya, marking a significant partnership aimed at providing internship opportunities for undergraduates.

The primary objective of this MoU is to facilitate internship placements for students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Economics degree program. As part of the agreement, the People’s Bank will offer 50 internship positions annually to the university’s economics undergraduates, providing them with valuable professional experience in the banking sector.

The University of Kelaniya and Dalian Ocean University, Island Research Center, Ministry of Natural Resources, People's Republic of China, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 23rd of March 2023. The virtual signing ceremony took place at 8:00 am Sri Lankan time, marking a significant step in fostering international academic cooperation.

The MoU aims to strengthen ties through educational exchanges, collaborative research, and cultural interaction. The agreement provides for the exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, academic materials, and participation in seminars, workshops, and joint research initiatives. The collaboration will also involve the development of specialized academic programs, conferences, and consultancies to enhance mutual academic and professional growth.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Professors from Japan for Collaborative Discussions 

A pair of esteemed professors from Japan, Professor Tetsuya Sagawa from Kanazawa University and Professor Takahiro Nakano from Chukyo University, visited the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education at the University of Kelaniya on March 22, 2023. Their visit commenced at 8:30 am with a tour of the department, followed by an excursion to Vihara Mahadevi Balika Vidyalaya in Kiribathgoda at 9:00 am. During their visit to the school, the professors observed the lifestyle and physical activities of primary school students.

The professors' activities also included a presentation of their research findings from a study conducted in 2019 in collaboration with the University of Kelaniya. This presentation, held at the Royal Park Hotel in Kiribathgoda, focused on data regarding Sri Lankan primary students. The professors then met with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and members of the department on March 24, 2023. The meeting centered on exploring opportunities for student exchange programs and future research collaborations between the Japanese universities and the University of Kelaniya.

University of Kelaniya's Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies Signs MoU with CIPM Sri Lanka 

The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) of the University of Kelaniya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) Sri Lanka on February 16, 2023. The MoU was signed with the aim of fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the two organizations, particularly in the areas of human resource management. This partnership seeks to promote the principles, techniques, and practices of HRM, contributing to the optimization of human resource utilization both at national and international levels.

The primary goals of the visit were to strengthen partnerships between the University of Kelaniya, German universities, and research institutions and to share information on DAAD-funded scholarships and research initiatives available to faculty and students.

The University of Kelaniya hosted an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility Programme on March 13, 2023, with a visiting delegation from the School of Humanities at the University of Tallinn, Estonia. The event, organized by the Centre for International Affairs of the University of Kelaniya, welcomed three distinguished guests: Professor Merilyn Meristo (French Studies), Professor Maris Saagpakk (German Studies), and Ms. Siigi Soidro (International Office).

During their visit, the delegation met with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Also present were Senior Professor Neelakshi C. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the Bank of Ceylon on March 9, 2023, during a ceremony at the University Senate room. Representing the Bank of Ceylon were Mr. K. A. Ajith Karunarathna, Deputy General Manager (Product and Banking Development), and Mr. H. K. Rajapakse, Head of IT (Acting), while Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar, signed on behalf of the University of Kelaniya.

This MoU aims to strengthen long-term strategic collaboration in banking technology development, innovation, and internship opportunities. The agreement includes developing new and innovative banking solutions, assigning internship placements for undergraduates, and joint activities in areas of mutual interest, particularly in emerging banking technologies.

University of Kelaniya Licenses Technology for Enhancing Telecommunications Infrastructure 

The University of Kelaniya advanced in research commercialization by signing a technology licensing agreement with Infosoft Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. on March 9, 2023. This agreement, signed at the University Senate room, enables Infosoft Lanka to implement a patented "Addressable Data Communication System for Industry Automation and IIoT" based on the CAN protocol. Developed by a team from the Department of Physics & Electronics, the technology aims to enhance telecommunication and industrial automation.

The agreement, signed by Mr. Mahendra Dissanayake and Mr. Sathya Ganepola of Infosoft Lanka, and Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, marks an important collaboration. Key attendees included Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dr. Jehan Seneviratne, Dr. Kasun Piyumal, and other significant contributors involved in the AHEAD Project.

This new system addresses critical issues in existing IIoT systems, which rely heavily on master devices for communication. By enabling end devices to initiate communication, the invention enhances reliability and real-time control. The customizable system can be managed locally or remotely, offering a resilient alternative to traditional IoT systems, especially in industrial settings prone to interference.

University of Kelaniya Celebrates Women’s Day with “Mandodari 2023” Oratorical Contest 

In celebration of Women’s Day 2023, the University of Kelaniya’s Centre for Gender Studies organized “Mandodari 2023,” an oratory contest held on March 8, 2023, in Hall B343. The event aimed to foster public speaking skills and gender awareness among students.

Over 20 contestants from various departments participated, showcasing their oratory talents. U.G.D.W. Preethimali from the Department of Political Science won the title of ‘Best Orator,’ while M. Savindu Iroshan from the Department of Mass Communication was awarded the 1st runner-up position. Chathuri Bhagya Ranasinghe and W. Achini Hansika, both from the Department of International Studies, jointly secured the 2nd runner-up position.

The Financial Engineering Felicitation Ceremony 2023 was organized to honor lecturers and industry partners, including CFA Society Sri Lanka, Acuity Knowledge Partners (Pvt) Ltd, and KPMG Sri Lanka, for their contributions to the Financial Engineering Degree program's inaugural batch. The MOU aims to award a gold medal to the most outstanding student in the B.B. Mgt. University of Kelaniya Hosts Workshop on ‘Addressing Labour Market Challenges for Sustainable Development’ 

The University of Kelaniya’s Department of Economics, through its AHEAD research project (AHEAD R2 DOR HEMS KLN No.12), organized a report dissemination workshop on ‘Addressing Labour Market Challenges for Sustainable Development’ on the 3rd of March 2023. This workshop aimed to share insights from AHEAD-funded research on ‘The impact of Social Protection on Sustainable Development Goals.’

The keynote speech was delivered by Mr. R. P. A. Wimalaweera, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Foreign Employment, who emphasized the significance of social protection in achieving sustainable development. Dr. Roshini Jayaweera addressed key labour market challenges, particularly in relation to Sri Lanka's ageing population, and proposed a model adult welfare center as a viable solution. University of Kelaniya Hosts 9th HRM Students Research Symposium and Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony 

The Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Kelaniya hosted the 9th HRM Students Research Symposium and Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony for 2022 on the 25th of February 2023. This annual event, held at the Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium, provides a platform for students to showcase their research findings and celebrate their achievements in internship programs.

The event comprised two main sessions: the Students’ Research Symposium, where students presented their research projects, and the Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony, which included an experience-sharing session highlighting the value of internships. Dr. P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, attended as the Guest of Honour, while Dr. Prabashini Wijewantha delivered the keynote speech for the Research Symposium, acknowledging outstanding student researchers with the research excellence award.

The Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony featured a keynote speech by Ms. Erosha Fernando, Head of Talent and HR Services at INSEE Cement, who emphasized the importance of practical experience in career development. Students received certificates in recognition of their efforts in research and internships, and industry partners were awarded tokens of appreciation for their support in providing valuable internship opportunities.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Humanities Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022 

The inauguration ceremony of the Humanities Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022 (HUG 2022), organized by the Research Centre of the Faculty of Humanities, took place on February 24, 2023, at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya. This event was organized to promote research engagement among undergraduates.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, attended the event as the Chief Guest, and Emeritus Professor Sarath Amunugama delivered the keynote address. The symposium featured 190 abstracts presented by 215 undergraduate researchers, marking a substantial contribution to academic research within the Faculty of Humanities.

The event was organized by Senior Lecturer Kaumadee Bamunusinghe and Lecturer Asitha Amarakoon, with participation from Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Anjalee Wickramasinghe, Director of the Research Center, as well as heads of departments, academic and non-academic staff, and students.

University of Kelaniya's Alumni Association of Faculty of Science Conducts Workshop for A/L Students 

The Alumni Association of the Faculty of Science at the University of Kelaniya organized an engaging workshop for G.C.E. Advanced Level science students from GM/Sapugaskanda Maha Vidyalaya on February 24, 2023. This initiative aimed to inspire students and familiarize them with the university environment, encouraging them to pursue higher education in scientific fields.

Professor Sudath Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, delivered an inspiring motivational speech, while several Alumni Association members supported the event. The students had the opportunity to tour various university departments, including Chemistry, Physics and Electronics, Microbiology, and Plant and Molecular Biology. They also visited the Information and Communication Technology Center, the Library, and the Sports Complex.

This outreach event is part of the Alumni Association's ongoing efforts to foster a passion for higher education and scientific research among school students.

University of Kelaniya Hosts International Conference DeWeSAS 2023 

The University of Kelaniya's Faculty of Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Maharashtra Bhugolawidya Association (India), Solapur University, Pangea Geographical Association, and the Sri Lanka Association of Geographers, hosted the DeWeSAS 2023 international conference on “Developmentalism Vs. Wellbeing of South Asian Societies.” Held on February 23 and 24, the conference served as a forum for researchers to present studies across eight thematic areas and foster academic partnerships across South Asia.

The conference’s inauguration was attended by distinguished guests including H.E. Mr. Gopal Baglay, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Dr. Mrunalini Fadnavis, Vice Chancellor of Solapur University. Keynote speaker Mr. Abdur Rahim Siddiqui, Country Director for the UN World Food Programme in Sri Lanka, addressed attendees on regional issues. Other notable guests included Mr. Nihal Ranasingha, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and Senior Professor Chandana P. Udawatte, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

During the conference, MoUs were signed between the University of Kelaniya and Solapur University to enhance academic, student, and field research collaboration. Post-conference excursions for international presenters were organized to promote Sri Lanka’s cultural sites, including visits to Colombo and Ramayana-related locations in Nuwara Eliya, thereby contributing to local tourism.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Forum for Career Prospects 2023 

The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) at the University of Kelaniya hosted the Forum for Career Prospects 2023 on February 23, 2023, at the FCMS Auditorium. Organized by the Internship Center and AHEAD Project in collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit (CGU), the event was themed “Ace Your Internship for Your Future Career” and aimed to provide insights on career preparation.

During the event, an MoU was signed between the University of Kelaniya and Altria Consulting (Pvt) Ltd to facilitate internship opportunities for FCMS students, focusing on expertise in ERP SAP solutions and data analytics. The agreement marked a significant step in strengthening practical learning experiences for undergraduates.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Lecturer Ruwan Buddhika, with industry professionals including Mr. Malinda Boyagoda from PWC Sri Lanka, Ms. Kushmanthi De Silva from Daraz, and Ms. Dilrukshi Kurukulasuriya from Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC. The discussion focused on essential skills for undergraduates, engaging over 400 virtual participants. University of Kelaniya's Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies Wins Two Gold Awards 

The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) at the University of Kelaniya received two gold awards at the 2022 National Convention on Quality and Productivity (NCQP) competition organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP). The awards, recognizing achievements in the Quality Circles and Cross-Functional category, were presented on February 21, 2023, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo.

The first gold award, presented to the “Good to Great” team, honored their "Digitalization of Student Information and Results Management System." This system enables students to register for exams, download admission forms, check student details, and view results online, promoting efficiency and reducing paper usage.

The second gold award went to the “Agile” team for the "Digitalization of Internship System of FCMS." As the first digital internship system implemented at a Sri Lankan university, it allows for digital tracking, reporting, and evaluating of training records across all degree programs, moving away from manual documentation.

University of Kelaniya Engages in the First International Nuclear Science Olympiad 

The University of Kelaniya made a significant contribution to the first International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO), held from February 13 to 17, 2023, at the Vienna International Center, Austria. Senior Prof. H. H. Sumathipala from the Department of Physics and Electronics attended the meeting, actively participating in the establishment of guidelines and regulations for the Olympiad.

Prof. Sumathipala has been appointed as Secretary of the INSO Steering Committee, a role he will fulfill over the next three years. This initiative, led by the Asian Network for Education in Nuclear Technology (ANENT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aims to foster nuclear science education and engagement at the international level.

Also representing the University of Kelaniya, Senior Prof. P. A. A. Perera served as an International Jury member, contributing to the syllabus development, competition structure, and preparatory materials for participants.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Seminar on Sri Lanka–Indonesia Bilateral Relations 

The International Studies Student’s Association (ISSA) of the Department of International Studies, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Colombo, organized a seminar on February 16, 2023, at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium. The event celebrated the longstanding bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Indonesia and highlighted the diplomatic and cultural connections shared by the two nations.

The seminar provided valuable insights into the history and significance of the relationship between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, fostering understanding and appreciation among students and attendees.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation 

An MoU was signed between the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, and the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation (SLTF) on February 13, 2023, at the university’s Senate Room. This partnership aims to foster knowledge exchange, share resources, and promote a healthy lifestyle within the community.

The agreement seeks to enhance the academic and practical resources available for students, leveraging SLTF’s expertise in martial arts training. Through collaborative programs, both parties intend to inspire healthier living practices, integrating physical fitness with education in sport science.

University of Kelaniya Launches Beach Cleanup Project at Wellawatta Beach 

The Department of Geography at the University of Kelaniya organized a beach cleanup on the 13th of February 2023, held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Wellawatta Beach. This event was conducted in celebration of World Wetlands Day, which falls on the 2nd of February, under the theme "Mihikatha Hedakala Sonduru Bima; Theth Bima." The project aimed to secure wetlands as essential parts of the ecosystem.

The cleanup saw participation from the academic staff and over 70 undergraduates from the Department of Geography, who joined efforts to protect and restore the beach environment.

University of Kelaniya Hosts "MakHer; Girls and STEM" Workshop 

The University of Kelaniya’s University Business Linkage Cell (UBL Cell), in collaboration with Makers Global, the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, the Industry Interaction Cell for Computing and Technology (IICFTC), and IgniterSpace, successfully held a workshop titled “MakHer; Girls and STEM” on the 11th of February 2023. This initiative aimed to inspire and empower young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

The workshop was led by Ms. Nevindaree Premarathna, CEO and Founder of Makers Global, who facilitated sessions to introduce participants to STEM concepts and support them in exploring STEM-related career pathways. Dr. Chandanamali Punchihewa, CEO and Chief Scientist of Genelabs Medical (Pvt) Ltd, delivered an impactful keynote address. Over 65 female undergraduates from various faculties and female staff members of the university attended the event.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Workshop for Grassroot Entrepreneurs 

The University of Kelaniya’s Central Business Incubator (CBI) organized a three-day workshop on entrepreneurship from the 7th to the 9th of February 2023. Held in collaboration with local entrepreneurs from the Dalugama area, the workshop aimed to educate emerging business owners and foster a support network among grassroots entrepreneurs.

The event opened with remarks from Dr. P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, while Prof. Ravi Fernando from the Department of Marketing Management served as a key resource person. Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, Director of CBI, outlined the center's vision to nurture local enterprise. The second day featured insights on value propositions shared by Dr. C. N. Wickramasinghe from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management. The third day covered digital marketing, tax and accounting, and entrepreneurial mindfulness, with Senior Lecturers Harshaka Hettiarachchi, Dr. Mudith Sujeewa, Mr. Pubudu Kaushalya, and Tharindu Weerasinghe leading sessions.

Approximately 60 participants attended each day of the workshop, benefitting from this intensive learning experience.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with VIA University College Viborg, Denmark 

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Kelaniya and VIA University College Viborg, Denmark, was formalized on the 7th of February 2023. This agreement, endorsed by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, aims to strengthen academic collaboration, facilitate student exchanges, and foster research partnerships between the two institutions.

The collaboration outlines several areas of engagement: staff exchanges, collaborative research, and knowledge transfer through both virtual and onsite sessions. Additionally, the agreement encourages cultural and linguistic exchanges to improve students' English language skills and broadens international exposure through summer schools, student mobility, and internship opportunities.

University of Kelaniya Signs Two MoUs with Tomorrow Technology Education Service Centre, Beijing 

The University of Kelaniya signed two significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Tomorrow Technology Education Service Centre (TTESC), Beijing, on the 2nd of February 2023. These agreements were established to extend the University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Business Studies (MBS) degree programs to students in China, enhancing educational collaboration between Sri Lanka and China.

The ceremony was held in the Vice-Chancellor’s office and was attended by Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilake, the Registrar of the university. Dr. P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr. M. M. M. Shamil, Head of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, along with Dr. Ruwani Fernando, Dr. Madurika Nanayakkara, Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, and Senior Lecturer Harshaka Hettiarachchi, who are the academic and technical coordinators for these programs, were also present to support this international initiative.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Senate Awards Ceremony to Recognize Outstanding Researchers 

The University of Kelaniya held a Senate Awards ceremony on the 25th of January 2023, where researchers whose work had been published in internationally recognized journals were honored with Senate Awards and cash prizes. This event served to acknowledge and reward academic contributions that uphold the university’s research standards and global presence.

The awards were presented by Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University, in the presence of Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, and Senate members. Among the award recipients from the Faculty of Medicine were Dr. G. P. S. Gunaratna (Department of Parasitology) and Dr. R. M. S. Lanka Ranaweera (Department of Anatomy). University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with the ACCA, Sri Lanka 

The University of Kelaniya and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Sri Lanka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 24th of January 2023, aimed at offering a prestigious “Gold Medal” to the top-performing student in the Dissertation course unit of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree programme. This collaboration aims to recognize outstanding academic achievements and further strengthen industry ties with the MBA programme.

The MBA programme, which has been a key player in management education in Sri Lanka since 2005, has continually developed through such industry partnerships. The gold medal will be awarded to the student with the highest marks in the Dissertation course unit. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, along with other distinguished guests, including Mr. K. K. K. University of Kelaniya Hosts Certificate Award Ceremony for Three Diploma Programmes 

The University of Kelaniya hosted the Certificate Award Ceremony for students who successfully completed three diploma programmes offered by the Department of Mass Communication. The event, held on the 22nd of January 2023 at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium, recognized the achievements of graduates from the Diploma in Mass Communication, Diploma in Public Relations and Media Management, and Higher Diploma in Public Relations.

A total of one hundred students were awarded certificates, providing them with enhanced career opportunities in their respective fields. Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, was the Chief Guest at the ceremony. The keynote address was delivered by renowned Sri Lankan vocalist Santhush Weeraman. Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, along with course coordinators and academic staff members, also participated in the event, which celebrated the accomplishments of the graduates.

University of Kelaniya Inaugurates the 5th Batch of the Diploma in Buddhist Psychology and Counselling 

The University of Kelaniya inaugurated the 5th batch of the Diploma in Buddhist Psychology and Counselling (2023) on the 22nd of January 2023 at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Humanities. The event, conducted by the Department of Pāli and Buddhist Studies, marked the beginning of a new academic year for students pursuing this specialized course.

Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Senior Lecturer Mr. Tharidu Weerasinghe from the Department of Human Resource Management delivered the keynote speech, while Senior Prof. Uditha Garusingha, from the Department of Pāli and Buddhist Studies, presented a special lecture. The introductory speech was delivered by Emeritus Senior Prof. Mr. Sumanapala Galmangoda, on the invitation of the course coordinator, Senior Lecturer Dr. Gamini Wijayasinghe.
