University of Kelaniya Secures 1st Place in UI GreenMetric Ranking 

The University of Kelaniya has achieved the top rank among Sri Lankan universities in the 2023 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking. Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to sustainability, the University also improved its global position, advancing to 226th from 241st in 2022 out of 1,183 universities worldwide.

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, established by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, assesses universities’ environmental sustainability across six key criteria: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Conservation, Transportation, and Education. With 39 indicators, the ranking reflects each institution's dedication to fostering green campuses and environmental stewardship, marking a significant recognition of the University of Kelaniya’s environmental efforts.

This accomplishment underscores the University’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices on campus and fostering awareness among students, staff, and the community, reinforcing its role as a leader in environmental sustainability.

University of Kelaniya Wins the South Asia Youth Water Challenge 2023 

The Electronics Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) Team of the University of Kelaniya has won the prestigious South Asia Youth Water Challenge 2023 for their innovation, an "Automated Stand-alone Wireless Water Quality Monitoring and Rainwater Harvesting System." This cutting-edge system automatically collects rainwater and directs it to different tanks based on monitored water quality, aiming to connect arid and rural areas with real-time water quality monitoring and sustainable water management.

The team was awarded the Youth Water Changemakers Award at a ceremony organized by the Global Water Partnership, held at the Water Pavilion of COP 28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023. The awards, presented by His Excellency Kefentse Mzwinila, Botswana’s Minister of Lands, Water, and Water Affairs, highlighted promising climate-resilient innovations. Recognized for its potential to address water security and climate resilience, the EDIC team's innovation will be supported for further development, enhancing its scalability and replication for broader impact.

The award ceremony at the University of Kelaniya was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor, and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar, along with Team EDIC members including Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Professor Aruna Ranaweera, Coordinator, EDIC. University of Kelaniya Establishes MoU with LOLC Life Assurance Ltd and LOLC General Insurance PLC 

The University of Kelaniya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LOLC Life Assurance Ltd and LOLC General Insurance PLC on the 15th of December 2023, at the University Senate Room. This collaboration is intended to create internship and management trainee opportunities for Insurance Degree undergraduates, strengthening the pathway from academic learning to professional practice.

The MoU was signed by Mrs. Nadika Opatha, Director and Chief Executive Officer, representing LOLC Life Assurance Ltd, alongside Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Professor W. M. C. B. Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The agreement marks a collaborative commitment to support students in gaining hands-on experience and skills necessary for career development in the insurance industry.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with College of Human and Social Sciences, Kanazawa University 

The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the College of Human and Social Sciences of Kanazawa University, Japan, on the 5th of December 2023 at the Faculty of Humanities Auditorium. This MoU establishes a collaborative agreement to foster academic exchanges, research initiatives, and shared educational opportunities between the two institutions.

Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, and Professor Kaname Miura, Dean of the College of Human and Social Sciences, Kanazawa University, formalized the agreement. Mr. N. Nalika Kandewatta, Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Lecturer M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, Senior Lecturer Dr. Charika Wickramaratne, as well as Professor Tetsuya Sagawa, Ms. Noriko Hamura, and Mr. Jun Mogami from Kanazawa University, joined the event online.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Cultural Exchange Programme with Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT 

The University of Kelaniya welcomed delegates from the Japanese Goodwill Ship PEACEBOAT on the 20th of November 2023 in Colombo, engaging in a cultural exchange program aimed at fostering mutual understanding and learning. This day-long event provided a platform for students from the University of Kelaniya and Japanese guests aboard the ship to connect and share their cultural heritage.

The program began with a welcome address by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director of the Centre for International Affairs, who has coordinated this annual event since 2001. The day unfolded with a series of performances, including a traditional Sinhala song and dance that showcased Sri Lankan cultural richness. Language learning activities allowed participants to engage in both Sinhala and Japanese, while traditional attire, origami, and traditional games facilitated further cultural immersion.

Participants from the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, and Commerce and Management Studies joined the event. In the afternoon, guests experienced Japanese music, dance, and dressing in traditional Japanese attire. The program concluded with a visit to the PEACEBOAT at the Colombo Port, symbolizing the success of this enriching cross-cultural exchange.

University of Kelaniya Faculty of Medicine Donates Fully Equipped School Laboratory to Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya 

As part of its ongoing community care initiatives, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya officially handed over a newly equipped school laboratory to Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya, marking the completion of the program's second phase. This project, connected with the Health Camp and Medical Exhibition 2023, included the full renovation of a previously unused building at the school, transforming it into a fully functional laboratory for student use.

The Health Camp and Medical Exhibition, held on April 30 under the theme “Suwapath Diviyata Manusath Mehewara” ("A Human Mission for a Healthy Life"), saw over 5,000 attendees for health services and more than 10,000 visitors to the medical exhibition. The first phase of the initiative included donations of school equipment and a book drive valued at nearly LKR 500,000, held on July 27, benefitting students of Ihala Nanneriya Vidyalaya. Following the laboratory donation in this second phase, the third phase will see the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall for Galgamuwa Maha Nanneriya Vidyalaya, scheduled to be completed soon.

The event was attended by Cadre Chair Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Cadre Chair Senior Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi; and Professor Shiromi Perera, whose support has been instrumental in these community projects.

This recognition is a notable accomplishment, with the University of Kelaniya being one of only three medical schools in Sri Lanka to earn a position in the global listing.

THE World University Rankings is a respected global league table that evaluates research-intensive universities across core areas such as teaching quality, research impact, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. The ranking system incorporates 18 performance indicators to deliver a comprehensive comparison of institutions. The Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Kelaniya hosted a significant media discussion on "Violence Against Women and Girl Children" on 26th October 2023. The event aimed to raise awareness about the issue of violence affecting women and girls and to engage key stakeholders in addressing this pervasive social challenge.

The discussion featured prominent speakers from various fields. Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, opened the event by welcoming the participants and addressing the social impact of violence against women and girl children. Senior Professor Anuruddhi Edirisinghe from the Department of Forensic Medicine presented insights on the medico-legal aspects of the issue. The event also included contributions from Mrs. Renuka Jayasundara, Deputy Inspector General of Police, who discussed child abuse, and Mrs. Rasanjali Pathirage, President of the Disability Organizations Joint Front, who highlighted the violence faced by differently-abled girls. Lawyer Chathura Gunarathna provided an overview of the legal frameworks surrounding violence against women and children, and Mrs. Iresha Dharmasena from the National Committee on Women shared the committee's role in addressing these issues.

University of Kelaniya Fosters Future E-commerce Leaders with Daraz Collaboration  

A transformative collaboration between the Department of Marketing Management at the University of Kelaniya and Daraz aimed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands, empowering students to become future leaders in the dynamic realm of e-commerce and digital marketing. This initiative, which commenced in August 2023, involved a four-day workshop held from 16th to 19th October 2023, including lectures, panel discussions, case studies, and field visits, providing students with valuable insights into the world of e-business and e-commerce.

The workshop featured sessions delivered by Daraz's senior management team, including Mr. Sajith Suhile, Mr. Oshan Ranatunga, Mr. Kaushal Mendis, and others, who engaged in discussions with students on contemporary e-commerce topics. Students worked on two comprehensive case studies related to commercial strategies and supply chain operations, which they later presented at the closing ceremony on 23rd November 2023. The students' presentations were evaluated by a distinguished panel from Daraz, and certificates were awarded to participants in recognition of their efforts.

The partnership will enable joint research initiatives, participation in seminars, academic meetings, and the organization of joint conferences and workshops. Faculty members from the Department of Chemistry, University of Kelaniya, will lead research activities in collaboration with Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd, focusing on the scientific exploration of traditional Herbo-mineral medicines.

University of Kelaniya Engages in Educational Dialogue with Kanazawa and Chukyo Universities of Japan 

An educational discussion took place on 5th September 2023 between representatives from Kanazawa University and Chukyo University of Japan and the University of Kelaniya. This meeting, held at the Vice Chancellor’s office, focused on collaborative educational research in inter-university sport education and social sciences. The parties discussed mutual goals and agreed to offer Japanese scholarships as part of Inter-University Student Exchange programs.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, led the discussions alongside Professor Tetsuya Sagawa from Kanazawa University, and Professors Shohei Kokudo, Tohiru Koizo, and Takahiro Nakano from Chukyo University. The Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya hosted a workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT) for students from Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda, on 4th September 2023. Held on the university campus, the workshop aimed to introduce students to Arduino software and inspire greater interest in information technology among female students, addressing the low representation of women in the tech industry.

Participants included students from grades 8 to 13 who are members of the school’s IoT club. The IT Department of the National Institute of Education also joined the workshop, enhancing the interactive learning experience. The workshop was well-received, with students showing enthusiasm and engagement in the hands-on activities.

The Kalana Mithuru Sevana at the University of Kelaniya organized the Peer Counselors Certificate Awarding Ceremony 2023 for Batch 01 on 25th August 2023. The event, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium, also marked the 25th anniversary of Kalana Mithuru Sevana, established in 1998. Additionally, the inauguration ceremony for Peer Counselor Batch 02 was conducted on the same day.

The primary objectives of this program were to enhance awareness among students about peer counseling, promote mental well-being, and prevent mental health-related issues through comprehensive training. Emeritus Professor Mangalika Hettiarachchi, the former Director and Founder of Kalana Mithuru Sevana, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the center's legacy and importance.

University of Kelaniya Signs MoU with Mastercard Sri Lanka 

The Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya formalized a collaborative agreement with Mastercard Sri Lanka on 15th August 2023, with a signing ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. This partnership aims to advance studies and research on digital transformation, offering students significant opportunities in this vital field.

As part of the MoU, the Mastercard Digital Excellence Award will recognize outstanding research on digital transformation, and select students will be eligible for internships at the Mastercard Technology Centre in Bangalore, India. This initiative highlights the shared commitment of both institutions to promoting academic and practical advancements in digital technologies.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) on 11th August 2023 at the Vice-Chancellor's office at the University of Kelaniya. This partnership aims to strengthen collaboration on sports science, physical education, and anti-doping research and awareness initiatives.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, signed the MoU alongside key university representatives, including Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University; and Ms. M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education. Representing SLADA were Professor Arjuna De Silva, Chairman, and Dr. Shiroma Pilapitiya De Alwis, Director General.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Japan-Sri Lanka Cultural Exchange Program - Global Youth Leader 

A Japan-Sri Lanka cultural exchange program was held from 17th to 23rd August 2023, bringing together Japanese and Sri Lankan students for a week-long journey of cross-cultural engagement. This program, organized by the UNSDGs in collaboration with the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Kelaniya, included participation from 18 Japanese students, 42 UNSDG members, 15 undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya's Japanese Unit, and five high school students from Sri Lanka.

The visiting Japanese students were warmly received at the Granbell Hotel in Colombo by students from the University of Kelaniya and high school Japanese language students. The group engaged in a range of activities, including visits to the National Youth Services Council (NYSC), the Parliament of Sri Lanka, and the President's House. Their cultural exploration extended to notable sites such as the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, New Giragama Tea Factory, University of Peradeniya, and the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

The program also featured a lecture by H.E. Mr. Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka, held at the University of Kelaniya, and an insightful panel discussion with key participants including Mrs. Anna Suzuki from the Japanese Embassy, Mr. Sakurazawa from JICA, Mr. Sato from Granbell Hotel, Mr. Kawano of the Japanese School, and Professor Ananda Kumara. Concluding the week, participants made presentations on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at NYSC, celebrated with a farewell party, and played a friendly cricket match at Royal College in Colombo, fostering deep ties and mutual understanding.

Professor Jiajuan Xiong of the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE), Chengdu, China, met with Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, on June 25, 2023, at the Vice-Chancellor's office as part of her research visit. Professor Xiong conveyed greetings and presented a memento on behalf of Professor Zhuo Zhi, President of SWUFE.

During her stay, Professor Xiong also held discussions on June 13 with Dr. Kavithaa Rajarathnam, Head of the Department of Linguistics, and Ms. Kumudu Gamage, Former Head, exploring academic collaborations. Professor Xiong announced a three-year full scholarship opportunity for a Linguistics graduate from Kelaniya to pursue a Master’s degree at SWUFE starting September 2023. She also engaged with BA Honours Linguistics students on her research project on Nominal Phrases in Chinese and Sinhala and utilized the university library for her studies.

The University of Kelaniya held the inauguration ceremony for the BSc Honors in Sports Science Degree Programme on the 5th of June 2023 in the Faculty of Science Board Room. Organized to welcome the 2021/2022 intake of students, the event marked the beginning of their journey in sports science education.

The ceremony was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the chief guest, along with Senior Professor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and several department heads and faculty members. Professor Aruna Wanninayake, Head of the Sports and Exercise Science Unit, and Mr. G. G. U. Organized by the Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS), this program empowers undergraduates with knowledge of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters attitudes towards environmental conservation.

Dr. Pansujee Dissanayake, Deputy Director of CSS and SLTP coordinator, introduced the program’s objectives. Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva and Registrar Mr. K.K.K. This event, held at the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, aimed to educate undergraduates on financial resources and services available to support entrepreneurial ventures.

The programme addressed common challenges faced by budding entrepreneurs, including financing constraints that often hinder start-up efforts. RDB representatives, including Chairman Mr. Susantha De Silva, Assistant General Manager for Marketing Mr. L. A. R. Fernando, Digital Banking Manager Mr. Hasitha Amarasinghe, and Senior Manager for Credit Mr. Saman Priyankara, provided insights into financial support and resources available through RDB. This partnership aims to equip LIS graduates from the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, with hands-on experience at the Library and Information Centre (LIC) of CBSL.

The program focuses on developing skills in library automation, database management, and the use of KOHA software. Graduates will also gain access to valuable reference sources, a diverse collection of works, and extensive databases at CBSL, enriching their expertise in library sciences.

This workshop series aimed to provide small and medium-scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) with essential knowledge of digital marketing strategies and applications relevant to their business growth.

Professor P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, inaugurated the first day’s session, followed by an introduction from Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, Director of the Central Business Incubator. Senior Lecturer Mr. D. K. Thilina from the Department of Marketing Management served as the resource person, focusing on strategic digital marketing planning for effective online presence. This new product, developed by the university and manufactured by Orel Corporation, integrates innovative technology allowing homeowners to control ceiling fans through a smartphone app, without requiring a neutral connection. The technology enables any existing ceiling fan to be converted into a smart fan by simply replacing the traditional fan regulator with the newly designed controller.

The event also included the signing of five licensing agreements between the University of Kelaniya and Orel Corporation Pvt Ltd, marking the transfer of newly invented and patented technologies developed by the university. The ceremony took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Office of the University of Kelaniya, marking a significant partnership aimed at providing internship opportunities for undergraduates.

The primary objective of this MoU is to facilitate internship placements for students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Economics degree program. As part of the agreement, the People’s Bank will offer 50 internship positions annually to the university’s economics undergraduates, providing them with valuable professional experience in the banking sector.

The agreement provides for the exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, academic materials, and participation in seminars, workshops, and joint research initiatives. University of Kelaniya Hosts Professors from Japan for Collaborative Discussions 

A pair of esteemed professors from Japan, Professor Tetsuya Sagawa from Kanazawa University and Professor Takahiro Nakano from Chukyo University, visited the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education at the University of Kelaniya on March 22, 2023. Their visit commenced at 8:30 am with a tour of the department, followed by an excursion to Vihara Mahadevi Balika Vidyalaya in Kiribathgoda at 9:00 am. During their visit to the school, the professors observed the lifestyle and physical activities of primary school students.

The professors' activities also included a presentation of their research findings from a study conducted in 2019 in collaboration with the University of Kelaniya. This presentation, held at the Royal Park Hotel in Kiribathgoda, focused on data regarding Sri Lankan primary students. The professors then met with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and members of the department on March 24, 2023. The meeting centered on exploring opportunities for student exchange programs and future research collaborations between the Japanese universities and the University of Kelaniya.

Developed by a team from the Department of Physics & Electronics, the technology aims to enhance telecommunication and industrial automation.

In celebration of Women’s Day 2023, the University of Kelaniya’s Centre for Gender Studies organized “Mandodari 2023,” an oratory contest held on March 8, 2023, in Hall B343. The event aimed to foster public speaking skills and gender awareness among students.

Over 20 contestants from various departments participated, showcasing their oratory talents. U.G.D.W. Preethimali from the Department of Political Science won the title of ‘Best Orator,’ while M. Savindu Iroshan from the Department of Mass Communication was awarded the 1st runner-up position. Chathuri Bhagya Ranasinghe and W. Achini Hansika, both from the Department of International Studies, jointly secured the 2nd runner-up position.

This workshop aimed to share insights from AHEAD-funded research on ‘The impact of Social Protection on Sustainable Development Goals.’

The keynote speech was delivered by Mr. R. P. A. Wimalaweera, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Foreign Employment, who emphasized the significance of social protection in achieving sustainable development. Dr. Roshini Jayaweera addressed key labour market challenges, particularly in relation to Sri Lanka's ageing population, and proposed a model adult welfare center as a viable solution. The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) at the University of Kelaniya received two gold awards at the 2022 National Convention on Quality and Productivity (NCQP) competition organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP). The awards, recognizing achievements in the Quality Circles and Cross-Functional category, were presented on February 21, 2023, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo.

The first gold award, presented to the “Good to Great” team, honored their "Digitalization of Student Information and Results Management System." This system enables students to register for exams, download admission forms, check student details, and view results online, promoting efficiency and reducing paper usage.

The second gold award went to the “Agile” team for the "Digitalization of Internship System of FCMS." As the first digital internship system implemented at a Sri Lankan university, it allows for digital tracking, reporting, and evaluating of training records across all degree programs, moving away from manual documentation.

University of Kelaniya Launches Beach Cleanup Project at Wellawatta Beach 

The Department of Geography at the University of Kelaniya organized a beach cleanup on the 13th of February 2023, held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Wellawatta Beach. This event was conducted in celebration of World Wetlands Day, which falls on the 2nd of February, under the theme "Mihikatha Hedakala Sonduru Bima; Theth Bima." The project aimed to secure wetlands as essential parts of the ecosystem.

The cleanup saw participation from the academic staff and over 70 undergraduates from the Department of Geography, who joined efforts to protect and restore the beach environment.

The University of Kelaniya’s University Business Linkage Cell (UBL Cell), in collaboration with Makers Global, the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, the Industry Interaction Cell for Computing and Technology (IICFTC), and IgniterSpace, successfully held a workshop titled “MakHer; Girls and STEM” on the 11th of February 2023. This initiative aimed to inspire and empower young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

The workshop was led by Ms. Nevindaree Premarathna, CEO and Founder of Makers Global, who facilitated sessions to introduce participants to STEM concepts and support them in exploring STEM-related career pathways. Dr. Chandanamali Punchihewa, CEO and Chief Scientist of Genelabs Medical (Pvt) Ltd, delivered an impactful keynote address. Over 65 female undergraduates from various faculties and female staff members of the university attended the event.

The University of Kelaniya’s Central Business Incubator (CBI) organized a three-day workshop on entrepreneurship from the 7th to the 9th of February 2023. Held in collaboration with local entrepreneurs from the Dalugama area, the workshop aimed to educate emerging business owners and foster a support network among grassroots entrepreneurs.

The event opened with remarks from Dr. P. N. D. Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, while Prof. Ravi Fernando from the Department of Marketing Management served as a key resource person. Dr. Srinath Dissanayake, Director of CBI, outlined the center's vision to nurture local enterprise. The second day featured insights on value propositions shared by Dr. C. N. Wickramasinghe from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management. The third day covered digital marketing, tax and accounting, and entrepreneurial mindfulness, with Senior Lecturers Harshaka Hettiarachchi, Dr. Mudith Sujeewa, Mr. Pubudu Kaushalya, and Tharindu Weerasinghe leading sessions.

Approximately 60 participants attended each day of the workshop, benefitting from this intensive learning experience.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Kelaniya and VIA University College Viborg, Denmark, was formalized on the 7th of February 2023. This agreement, endorsed by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, aims to strengthen academic collaboration, facilitate student exchanges, and foster research partnerships between the two institutions.

The collaboration outlines several areas of engagement: staff exchanges, collaborative research, and knowledge transfer through both virtual and onsite sessions. Additionally, the agreement encourages cultural and linguistic exchanges to improve students' English language skills and broadens international exposure through summer schools, student mobility, and internship opportunities.

These agreements were established to extend the University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Business Studies (MBS) degree programs to students in China, enhancing educational collaboration between Sri Lanka and China.

The University of Kelaniya and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Sri Lanka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 24th of January 2023, aimed at offering a prestigious “Gold Medal” to the top-performing student in the Dissertation course unit of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree programme. This collaboration aims to recognize outstanding academic achievements and further strengthen industry ties with the MBA programme.

The MBA programme, which has been a key player in management education in Sri Lanka since 2005, has continually developed through such industry partnerships. The gold medal will be awarded to the student with the highest marks in the Dissertation course unit. An Awareness Programme on Safe Migration was conducted on the 17th of January 2023 at the Career Guidance Unit Auditorium of the University of Kelaniya. The workshop was organized by the Career Guidance Unit (CGU) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The primary objective of the programme was to raise awareness about the importance of safe migration among university undergraduates.

The event saw the participation of forty registered undergraduates who were provided with refreshments, t-shirts, and other informational materials related to safe migration. The IOM also conducted a Quiz Competition at the end of the session, where the winners were awarded prizes, further engaging students in the topic.

The University of Kelaniya women’s badminton team claimed the Runner-up position in the Open Women’s category at the Vice Chancellor Challenge Trophy 2023, an Invitational Universities Staff Badminton Championship organized by the Recreational and Welfare Society of the University of Colombo. Held on the 13th and 14th of January 2023, the event featured four competitive categories: Open Men, Open Women, Over 40 Men, and Over 40 Women.

The winning team members from the University of Kelaniya included Dr. R. M. S. Lanka Ranaweera from the Department of Anatomy, Dr. Sulochani Ramanayaka from the Department of Social Statistics, Senior Lecturer Ms. Anoma Rathnayaka from the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, Ms. Nayomi Raymand from the Molecular Medicine Unit, and Ms. M. University of Kelaniya Signs Two MoUs with National Enterprise Development Authority 

The Central Business Incubator (CBI) of the University of Kelaniya signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA) on January 12, 2023. This collaboration aims to foster entrepreneurial opportunities for university students, providing internships and promoting their participation in NEDA's “Upadidari Vyawasayaka Udanaya” competition. Additionally, the partnership will assist in developing an MSME database and provide mentoring services through the SMEConnect platform.

The MoUs seek to strengthen the relationship between CBI, a key driver of entrepreneurial initiatives at the university, and NEDA, the governing body for Sri Lanka’s Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector. The partnership will enhance the SME landscape in Sri Lanka by creating platforms for training, guidance, and the efficient storage of MSME data.

University students with visual impairments conducted a practical session on Braille usage, while the interactive media librarian presented the library's Braille collection, audiobook project, and additional resources for visually impaired students. The event also included a guest lecture and workshop on the impact of Braille and assistive technology in promoting inclusivity and overcoming challenges faced by visually impaired individuals.

Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University, attended as the chief guest. Prof. Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar; Mr. Ashoka Weerawardhane, Chairman of the DAISY Lanka Foundation; Ms. Manique Gunaratne, Manager of the Specialized Training and Disability Resource Center; Dr. Shyamani Hettiarachchi, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Disability Studies; Ms. Vasantha Padmini, Writer, along with academic and non-academic staff, and students were also present to support the event.

University of Kelaniya Recognizes Excellence at the Long Service Awards and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony 2023 

The University of Kelaniya celebrated the dedication and achievements of its academic and non-academic staff members at the Long Service Awards and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony held on 2nd January, 2023 at the Dharmaloka Hall. Established as an annual event since 2007, the ceremony honors university employees for their service, accomplishments, and contributions throughout the previous year.

This year’s Vice-Chancellor’s Awards recognized numerous faculty members for excellence in research, innovation, and academic contributions. Awardees included Prof. I. K. Jayasekara (Department of Western Classical Culture), Prof. K. Karunathilaka (Department of Sociology), and Prof. P. A. D. H. N. Gunathilaka (Department of Parasitology), among others. Prof. Gunathilaka also received recognition as the Outstanding Young Researcher in the Faculty of Medicine, alongside Dr. J. M. R. Fernando (Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies) and Dr. R. A. T. P. Rupasinghe (Faculty of Computing and Technology). Various merit awards acknowledged researchers for their pioneering contributions in their respective fields.

Notable distinctions were given to Prof. P. A. Paranagama and Prof. G. A. S. M. Ganehiarachchi for their publications in indexed journals. The Faculty of Science was recognized as the faculty with the highest number of research presentations, with Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, accepting the award on behalf of the faculty.

Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor, presided over the ceremony, presenting awards and certificates. The event was attended by Deans, Heads of Departments, and other distinguished members of the University of Kelaniya, celebrating the dedication and achievements of the university community.

University of Kelaniya Hosts Inauguration Ceremony for Master of Business Studies 2023 

The University of Kelaniya marked the start of the third intake for its Master of Business Studies (MBS) program with an inauguration ceremony on 1st January, 2023 at the A. T. H. Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium within the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. Organized by the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, this event aimed to formally welcome new students and introduce them to life at the University of Kelaniya.

Ms. Thrimuthi Danushka, Group Manager – Human Resource at Ideal Group and an alumna of the first MBS batch, delivered a welcoming speech for the incoming students. Dr. Narada Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, served as the Chief Guest, with Senior Prof. N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, as Guest of Honor. Also present were Dr. M. M. M. Shamil, Head of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, Dr. Erandi Abeywardana, MBS Program Coordinator, other academic staff, and the new students.
