SDG 14 - Life Below Water
Life Below Water
Sustainable Development Goal 14, "Life Below Water," emphasizes the need for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources, essential for both environmental health and human prosperity. Covering over 70% of the Earth's surface, oceans play a crucial role in climate regulation, provide livelihoods, and support diverse ecosystems. In Sri Lanka, with its rich coastal and marine biodiversity, protecting marine resources is particularly critical, as millions rely on these ecosystems for food, income, and cultural heritage.
The University of Kelaniya actively contributes to SDG 14 through research, education, and community projects focused on marine conservation and sustainability. The university’s Center for Sustainability Solutions engages in programs on marine ecosystems, working on projects that aim to address local challenges such as coastal pollution, habitat degradation, and sustainable fisheries management. By partnering with local communities, NGOs, and governmental bodies, the university seeks to promote practices that reduce marine pollution, restore damaged ecosystems, and protect the coastal regions from the impacts of climate change. Through these initiatives, the University of Kelaniya plays a vital role in supporting Sri Lanka’s commitment to preserving marine resources and promoting sustainable practices. By fostering environmental awareness and research on marine conservation, the university contributes to a healthier, more resilient marine environment that will sustain future generations and protect the unique biodiversity found in Sri Lankan waters.
